BOOK REVIEW,A GUIDE TO WARTIME COLLECTABLES,ARTHUR WARD

BY ARTHUR WARD, PUB PEN AND SWORD,2013,THIS IS THE NEWEST PUBLICATION TO COME OUT OF THE UK ABOUT “MILITARIA” AS A WHOLE, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD GET A COPY IN ORDER TO SEE WHAT RELEVANCE IT WOULD HAVE TO A COLLECTOR…. IN A NUTSHELL,THE BOOK TRIES TO BE TOO HISTORICALLY TECHNICAL FOR THE NEWBIE,NOT ENOUGH PAGES, BADLY CROPPED PHOTOS IN PLACES WITH NOT ENOUGH DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION WITH PHOTOS,CONTAINS 2 PAGES OF TECHNICAL INFORMATION REGARDING UK DEACTIVATED WEAPON LAWS, BUT NO SUPPORTING DEAC WEAPONS PHOTOS,POOR COVERAGE OF BATTLEFIELD RELICS (AMOUNTING TO A PAGE OF TEXT IN TWO PLACES IN THE BOOK, BUT NO REPRESENTATIVE PHOTOS).ON THE PLUS SIDE, IT DOES ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERNET AND YOUTUBE,WHICH IS NICE TO SEE,AND SOME OF THE HISTORICAL INFORMATION MAKES INTERESTING READING FOR THE ADVANCED COLLECTOR. ITS THE KIND OF BOOK YOU WILL READ THROUGH THEN PASS ON…ITS NOT A KEEPER REFERENCE GUIDE,IT IS PERHAPS BETTER TO BORROW FROM A PUBLIC LIBRARY.IT ALSO HAS INCORRECT STATEMENTS SUCH AS HOW HE WRITES THAT THE 1916 GERMAN HELMET IS OUT OF REACH OF MOST COLLECTORS SO THEY HAVE TO MAKE DO WITH THE SIMILAR 1935 VERSION! (THERE IS NOTHING SIMILAR BETWEEN THE TWO),ALSO HE STATES THE 1935 VERSION HAD CUT OUT SIDES TO ENABLE TROOPS TO USE FIELD PHONES (I HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED A M35 SHELL WITH CUT OUT SIDES)..I THINK HE MEANS THE M1918 VERSION……ITS ALSO DISAPPOINTING TO SEE THAT THE PICTURE ON PAGE four “A BROAD SPECTRUM LAYOUT OF MILITARY INSIGNIA” IS MERELY A RE USE OF THE COVER PHOTO OF HIS PREVIOUS BOOK “BUYING AND SELLING WARTIME COLLECTABLES”,IT WOULD BE DISAPPOINTING IF OTHER PHOTOS HAD BEEN CULLED FROM THE PREVIOUS BOOK……
